GUIDED DISCOVERY

DEFINITION:
Guided discovery learning is based upon the discovery learning model, which also forms the basis of problem-based learning, simulation-based learning, and case-based learning, terms which are similar in origin but not identical to guided discovery learning.

The word “discover” comes from the Late Latin word discooperire, to discover, reveal, defined as to be the first to find out, see or know about, find out, learn of the existence of, or realize. Guided discovery learning combines pointing the way to understanding or problem-solving by a guide with the discovery of facts, relationships, and solutions by students themselves, as they explore, manipulate objects, discuss, or perform experiments, drawing upon their own experience and existing knowledge.

The specific process has the following set of objectives:
  1. To engage the player in a particular process of discovery
  2. To develop a precise relationship between the player’s discovered response and stimulus (activity and/or question) presented by the coach
  3. To develop sequential discovery skills that logically leads to the discovery of a concept
  4. To develop the patience in both the coach and the player that is required for the discovery process

ARTICLE: USING GUIDED DISCOVERY WITH YOUR TEAMS

'The goal of the developmental program is to develop the “soccer minds” of our players. We can do this by asking our players questions verses dictating and/or micro managing everything presented.
Players who think for themselves will develop into creative players who can anticipate within the game; instead of players who are predictable and react to game situations.'

ARTICLE: TEACHING IS NOT LEARNING- THE GUIDED DISCOVERY APPROACH FOR LEARNING

'The guided discovery approach cannot be rushed -- students must be allowed to make mistakes, pick wrong choices, and face consequences. This requires more time, but will help learners develop a deep understanding of principles; therefore, learning follow-up material is lot easier and faster.'
'The guided discovery approach can be used at all levels and should be used where fundamental concepts are involved.'
'The guided discovery approach is rooted in experiential education, hence it is highly practical.'

MOSSTON'S SLANTY LINE THEORY

CHANGING THE GAME PROJECT
One of the best ways adults can help children build competence is by using the Slanty Line theory of learning, developed by Dr. Muska Mosston.  The Slanty Line Theory is a concept that refutes the traditional method of straight-line concepts in learning.
